Celebrating 100 Years of the T-Shirt – DC/MD/VA T-Shirt Screen Printing

Did you know that this year the t-shirt is celebrating its 100^th birthday? T-shirts first gained popularity in the United States in 1913. The short-sleeved, crew neck shirts were issued by the U.S. Navy to be worn under uniforms. One hundred years later, they have become staples in our casual wardrobes and tools for self-expression and commercial messaging.

Americans spend a lot of time in t-shirts. I enjoy few things as much as putting on a t-shirt at the end of a long work day. To me it means comfort, relaxation, and letting your guard down.

Ninety-one percent of people claim to have a favorite t-shirt. My favorite and one that is still in my rotation is…17 years old! It is from my sophomore high school retreat. It’s super soft. It has holes in it. It’s not particularly attractive, but for some reason after six moves and countless times cleaning out my closet, I’ve held on to it. Maybe it is more for sentimental reasons, maybe it is because it’s just that comfortable, but what a great example of how a free giveaway can stand the test of time.
