For a majority of Americans, it’s the first thing they do when they wake up in the morning. For many, it’s what they do to keep occupied at the bus stop, while waiting in line at the grocery store, even while using the bathroom. Seventy-nine percent of smartphone users have their phone near them for all but two hours a day. Yup, we’re hooked.
With temperatures in the teens and twenties across much of the country, people need away to feed their addiction without freezing their “texting fingers.” Retailers have certainly responded to this consumer demand by selling gloves with “tech fingers” – that is, gloves made with conductive fibers or threads in the finger tips that will allow the user to continue using his smartphone even with the gloves still on.
How does it work?
Touchscreen devices feature capacitive touch which means that the screen recognizes movements through fluctuations in the screen’s electrical field. When pressure is applied to the screen, it is only registered if it has electrical current. Our fingers give off electrical impulses. Standard cloth, however, does not. This is why the thumbs and fingertips, or “texting fingers,” of gloves are being made with conductive cloth or thread that contains a very small amount of silver (the conductor). This allows the body’s energy to reach the touchscreen. Neat!
